Camp F.L.O. is the flagship program of the Believe In U Youth Foundation.
Camp F.L.O. aims to make New Orleans a
less violent city and a safer place to live.

We work with middle school students in 5th-8th grade who may have been suspended for fighting, and who have displayed a pattern of negative, aggressive or unsafe behavior within a school setting. Students who attend the Camp F.L.O program during the school year are often recommended for mentorship or counseling by parents, school leaders and teachers.

Classroom Sessions

Throughout the 12 week sessions, students engage with a structured literacy program that promotes reading comprehension skills and vocabulary acquisition.
Camp F.L.O aims to play an urgent role in reducing violent crime that is committed by juveniles. We do this with a unique and innovative approach to literacy and conflict resolution. We believe that young people learn best by doing and that this generation of students need to be outside and in nature doing as much as possible

Edward Abbey, author and environmentalist

Outdoor Adventures
and Camping
One of our key activities are outdoor adventures and excursions. We believe that when students spend time in nature and take part in camping, hiking and kayaking for example, the outcome improves their cognition, mood, self-esteem as well as making them physically healthier and less anxious.
Behavioral Data + Reading Comprehension
Another key activity that we focus on is building reading comprehension skills. We use behavioral data from the schools that students attend and create engaging stories that the students literally see themselves in. We believe that by building stronger readers with stories and scenarios that are linked to outdoor adventures that resonate with the reader, we can disrupt the strategy of creating jail space based on reading scores.

Project Based Learning Curriculum
During and after the Covid pandemic there was a strong demand for SEL curriculum. We have developed lessons and activities that schools and school districts can easily implement. We provide training and materials for schools as well as workshops and professional development sessions.
